“There is within the man the perverted gift of trivialization.” – Virgílio Ferreira
When people talk a lot about a book to me, generally, I tend to resist its reading. and that is what happened with Vargas Llosa's "A Civilização do Espéctaculo”(Notes on the Death of Culture: Essays on Spectacle and Society). I resisted, and resisted, but ended up reading it. As a matter of fact, I think, everyone should read it... even if it is just to speak ill of it, "with property"!

A very faithful description is made about what we let invade us every day, passively. Deep down, Llosa says that the culture was replaced by entertainment, primarily as an outlet for what disturbs us. And here, I could find that substitution justifiable, since I find myself not wanting books and movies and music and news to bring more worries into my time. The truth is that this entertainment, maybe because of the democratization of culture, also referenced in the book, is made to cover the greatest number of people, and what's wrong is the belief that to achieve everyone a decrease in quality is needed, instead of educating. (takes work and it is easier to dominate non-thinkers). People who seek the instant effect are being made and raise. Entertainment and culture are like candy you can buy, to be consumed and disappear.

What (I think) will make many of you mad with me (Mário doesn't say this!) is to find the access to culture made people, not more formed, but before mentally gifted, with the most triumphant stupidity and arrogance.
Well, this would suggest a reading and not to get lost in another attack.
I'm always looking for feedback, Yes?
